in Constant reverie - Spreckels - Rohnert Park
The multi-discipline art production in Constant reverie opens tonight at 8pm. This is an original collaborative production, that will explore the crazy, senseless, frightening, sexy, hilarious & confusing dreamworld that we all experience in one form or another. The cast is composed of dancers, actors, writers & others who have shared in the creation of this wonderfully entertaining presentation.

And … after each performance, there will be a “talk-back” where the Gloria & her cast members will be available to answer questions about the production, their perceptions of the roles in the production & how they felt going through the process of creation & collaborating with each other to arrive at the final result. You are most welcome to stay & meet the cast & ask your questions of any or all of them. Gloria is a recent graduate of SSu, with a double major in Psychology & Dance & plans to get a Masters in Dance Therapy. She is a devout believer in the therapeutic qualities of performance art & the world of dreams seen in this production is a very relevant topic for discussion. The interaction during the talk-back sessions will be enlightening & fun.

Arrive early to see an amazing production & watch people in new & challenging roles in this performance of “spoken dance & moving words!” Parking may be tight as Spreckels has another production in the main stage, but you will thoroughly enjoy this show. You have 4 chances to see it, as it runs for one weekend only.

Thursday, May 17th @ 8pm,
Friday, May 18th @ 8pm,
Saturday, May 19th @ 8pm,
Sunday, May 20th @ 5pm.

Souvenir - 6th Street Playhouse
For more than half a century the name Florence Foster Jenkins has been guaranteed to produce explosions of derisive laughter. Not unreasonably so, as this wealthy society eccentric suffered under the delusion that she was a great coloratura soprano when she was in fact incapable of producing 2 consecutive notes in tune. The climax of her career was a single concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944. Famously, it sold out in 2-hours. SOUVENIR, by turn hilarious & poignant, tells her story through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosme McMoon.

New Exhibit, Family Hikes at Spring Lake Regional Park
"Down the Drain: A Raindrop's Journey from Cloud to Creek" opens today at the Environmental Discovery Center at Spring Lake Regional Park. This exhibit offers families a fun, hands-on introduction to the water cycle. Children can pretend to be a raindrop by climbing the "cloud stairs" & then crawling through a model of a storm drain. They can create rain-related artwork & check out healthy water habitats at a tide pool with touchable, live sea creatures & an aquarium with fish from Spring Lake. This exhibit focuses on Sonoma County watersheds, the effects of water pollution & the prevention of storm drain contamination. The exhibit runs through June 3rd.

The Environmental Discovery Center also hosts naturalist-led family hikes on the 3rd Saturday of each month & this Saturday's hike is all about amphibians. EDC naturalists will lead 2, 1-hour walks into the park to view salamanders & newts. The hikes leave the Discovery Center at 1 & 3pm. After each hike, families can return to the Center to learn how to create amphibian habitats in their backyards. These will be easy to moderate hikes, with all ages welcome but strollers not recommended. Hikes are $5/per family. Hikers should wear warm clothes, good walking shoes & bring water. Heavy rain cancels.

Presented by Sonoma County Regional Parks & the Sonoma County Water Agency, the Environmental Discovery Center is at the Violetti Road entrance to Spring Lake Park in Santa Rosa & is open to the public noon-5pm Wednesday-Sunday. Admission is included in day-use parking.

Host High School Students
NWS PEACE Program, a non-profit & CSIET approved program, is seeking caring families to host High School students from various countries for the 2012 School Year. The students are 15-18 years of age & will begin arriving in August to spend the upcoming 5-10 months with a caring family while attending your local high school.

Whether you are a single parent, retired, have small children, teens or no children, you can have a great experience hosting an international teen! All that these students require is a bed, meals and a caring family to share their 5-10 month stay in our beautiful country. Since early placement is crucial to the success of the program, our goal is to have the students matched with host families by July 1st. The timing is important in developing the bonds of the "new family." Can't host, but want to be involved? Call us and we'll tell you how.

Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Honoring WWII Native American Code Talkers - Petaluma
"We are extremely proud to be hosting an exhibition from such a prestigious institution," explains Joe Noriel - Museum President. "The Code Talkers received little recognition for their service after the war, even though their efforts were instrumental in the victory in the Pacific. We are honored to tell the story of these unsung heroes".

The exhibition will also include local artifacts and stories representing local tribes. The exhibition will coincide with Memorial Day. The Museum will offer free admission to Veterans on that day.

The involvement of the code talkers expanded during World War II. Soldiers from the Comanche, Meskwaki, Sioux, Crow, Hopi & Cree nations, among others, took part in the effort. The best known of these projects is the formerly classified Navajo Code Talker Program, established by the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1942. The encoded messages proved to be a fast, accurate & indecipherable-to-the-enemy alternative, which suited the demands of the battlefield better than the painfully slow military devices that had been standard.

23 years after the end of World War II, the U.S. government declassified the Navajo & Comanche code talker programs and revealed Americas unsung heroes. In 1999 the U.S. Army presented the last surviving Comanche code talker with a the Knowlton award for outstanding intelligence work & in 2001 President George W. Bush presented the Congressional Gold Medal to 4 of the 5 living veterans of the original 29 Navajo code talkers.

Admission is $5/General, $3/Seniors & Children under 12 years. Children under 5 are free.

The Sebastopol Center for the Arts 2012
The Sebastopol Center for the Arts 2012 CAR-BOOT-SALE (CBS) season is about to start! Planned to be on EVERY LAST SUNDAY of the MONTH, with a Grand Finale on September 30th.

The market was launched in 2011 as a fundraiser for the Sebastopol Center Visual Arts by the new Program Manager Catherine Devriese who had lived in London for a decade and who named it after the English tradition of open air markets where vendors conduct business out of the “BOOT” or trunk of their car.

It was held in Center’s west parking lot in Depot Street and attracted a mix of vendors from the West County displaying a wide and eclectic array of goods and collectables. One might find Antiques, Art, Beads, Costume & Fine Jewelry, Home Crafts & Found Object Sculpture, Decor Items, Primitives, Baskets, Paintings, Linens or Textiles, Musical Instruments, Old Books, Vintage Toys, Furniture, Tools, as well as General Household Goods and many other such Whatnots.

This year the CAR-BOOT-SALE is all of that and is poised to evolve into an even more unique event that will extend the connection & participation of the Art Center within the local community. Buyers & vendors can all participate in a Sunday experience where shoppers meet & interact with (local) artists besides perhaps finding or discovering the long-wanted curios.

It is a short walk from the local farmers market to the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, so it is really easy for buyers to park once & attend both events.

SCA members are to receive CAR-BOOT-SALE perks; the opportunity to register in advance for discounted spaces. Single car parking spaces are available starting at $15/prepaid for Art Center members, $20/non-members. Space is limited. Reservations must be made a minimum of 1-week in advance. Unsold spaces will be available for a premium on a first come bases the day of the sale. Contact the Sebastopol Center for the Arts for an application. Call (707) 829 4797 or visit the SCA Gallery at 6780 Depot Street, Sebastopol.

Roustabout Theater brings Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” to life
One of Stephen Sondheim's most popular works, INTO THE WOODS is an adult’s perspective on the timeless stories of classic fairy tales. As all the stories’ characters meet up in the woods while looking for their true destinies, they find that happily ever after may not actually last all that long.

With the piercing wit & sharp insight he is known for, Sondheim has created a new musical theater classic: a tale of community & identity filled with glorious music & heartbreaking choices. June 9, July 7, August 11, & September 8 - 5:30pm

For the 1st time, Luther Burbank Home & Gardens will host a series of fundraiser pop-up dinners on the grounds of LBH&G on 4 summer evenings. This summer, he'll set up intimate dinners on the site where Burbank lived and experimented with plants at the turn of the 20th century. Guests will enjoy a wine & cheese pairing in the Greenhouse before sitting down to family-style dining in a unique outdoor setting. If you choose to attend more than one dinner in this series, be assured the menu will be different each time. His meals are created around what is in season & available that month from local growers and farms. Cost: $75/per person - wine included. (Seating is limited to 50 seats at each dinner.) 2nd Annual Fundraiser Softball Tournament for Calli
On July 28th & 29th we hope to come together as a community for one cause, for one family, for one angel. We are hosting the 2nd Annual fundraiser softball tournament at M Park. Saturday July 28th will be men’s & co-ed on Sunday the 29th. This is a fundraiser completely put on & supported thru donations. We are asking for your consideration & help, we are currently looking for a sponsor to help cover the costs of the tournament, (ie: site fees, insurance & necessary supplies). Along with raffle & auction items, any donation is appreciated. Donations received by June 1st will be advertised with the fundraiser, we will accept all donations up to the week of the event. All proceeds will directly go to the Murray family of Rohnert Park. Let’s take a moment to remember this family & their story. Taking us back to the tragic day of December 1, 2010 when we lost a precious angel named Calli. Calli & her mother Ling were walking home from S park, when they attempted to cross Snyder Lane at Medical Center Dr. a distracted driver struck them. Young 2-year old Calli was pronounced dead at the scene, only weeks away from her 3rd birthday. Her mother Ling underwent multiple evasive surgeries & after 100 days she was finally able to go home. To this day the family is still dealing with this tragic event, emotionally & physically. This weekend will serve as a time where we can come together & support them, give them a reason to smile & bring Jeff Murray back to one of his favorite sports.

It’s called Back to the Future…Come Back to Lena’s for the Future of Our Teens. We’re hosting this event here in the Chop’s building, which was once the iconic Lena’s Restaurant. The event will include a cocktail hour with appetizers prepared & served by our Chop’s Teen Catering Crew & guests will be treated to music from our Chop’s Teen Club Jam Band. From there, an Italian dinner will be served by the Maria Carrillo culinary students. We will have a performance by the Elsie Allen Drum Band, a live auction, then the highlight of the evening revolves around our Guest of Honor, Henry Trione.
