Sam & Troy Anker of Sam's For Play Cafe
Sam and her son Troy have a deep admiration for amazing women in Sonoma County. They are excited to present to you this month's honoree for Women Inspiring Women.
Christine Martin is the type of woman who puts her mind to something and then gets it done! Raised in rural West Texas, she developed a deep love for agriculture and farming. Years later, after moving to San Francisco and working in the corporate world, she found herself entertaining clients as a requirement of her job.
Because wine culture is so big in Northern California, Christine decided to learn all about wine and she fell in love. The flavors, how it’s made, how it’s distributed were a calling to Christine. There was something about wine, and something about Sonoma County that resonated with her West Texas agricultural roots.
So, Christine made a decision and bought some grapes – several tons of grapes – and proceeded to make wine. She struggled to get the grapes crushed, bottled and to market and did everything herself. Finally she met a mentor that challenged her to delegate, ask for help and learn to negotiate for funding. Soon, Ernest Wines was born.
As Ernest Wines grew and became more successful, Christine felt the need to make it easier for new winemakers like herself to make wine and then get it to market. She wanted to give them parity in crushing, bottling, package design and marketing so they could compete in the marketplace. So, she and her partners founded Grand Cru, a state-of-the-art facility that combines those services with an event space, so that smaller vintners can host tastings just like larger wineries.
Because Christine Martin makes a decision and then moves forward, isn’t afraid to take a risk and more importantly, isn’t resistant to coaching and learning, Sam’s For Play Café is adding her story to Women Inspiring Women.
